द्रोण शिक्षा समापन के बाद हस्तिनापुर के युवराजों के सामर्थ प्रदर्शन करने के उद्देश से एक क्रीडास्थल का निर्माण करवाते हैं। इसका उद्देश राजकुमारों को प्रजाजन से मिलवाना और उनके सामर्थों का प्रदर्शन था। वहाँ पर कर्ण भी अपने कला का प्रदर्शन करता है और अर्जुन को द्वंद के लिए ललकारता है। तब कृपाचार्य कर्ण के कुल का परिचय मांगते हैं। और इसी को आधुनिक कथाकार जाति की कुप्रथा और शोषण से जोड़ कर देखते हैं। पर क्या कहता है इस विषय पर वेद व्यास रचित महागाथा? किस कारण से कृपाचार्य ने कर्ण से उसकी पहचान पूछा था? क्या वो जाति वाद था या मर्यादा की स्थापना?
